What is a magazine?

A magazine is a periodical publication, generally published on a regular schedule, containing a variety of content. They are generally financed by advertising, by a purchase price, by prepaid subscriptions, or by a combination of the three.

The difference between PRINT and DIGITAL magazines?

Print will always have its place, but digital allows much more flexibility to reach the audience on their terms. It's safe to say that print and digital will always co-exist together, seamlessly being integrated into our everyday lives.

  • A paper magazine has to be printed, distributed and finally sold by the newsagents. These three processes, of course, incur a cost. Moreover, unsold copies of the magazine represent a loss for the publisher.

  • Digital, on the contrary, allows publishers to distribute their magazines on the web, without having to pay the commercial mediation of suppliers and sellers.

Market Analysis

1. Food Magazine

Demographics: The intended marketing for this magazine would be mainly for young/middle aged people from the ages of 25-64 year olds. The gender would be marketed towards females as the stereotype comes to place that women are subordinate and they usually prepare food in the house so it is targeted towards them. This type of magazine is aimed towards working class and middle class as they are likely to be doing the cooking themselves, The ethnicity would be diverse, we don't specifically see people in magazines, however we can see food that is mainly British dishes which could suggest that the ethnic is white as the majority of people in the UK is white.

Psychographics: Activities for this magazine would be cooking recipes from a variety different dishes from across the country. This magazine would usually be mainstream as it covers trend with food dishes from

Geographics: This type of magazine would be national as it would feature food and cooking from across the country alone. Some magazines can sometimes be international where it features food from around the world and celebrates its diversity across different cultures.

2. Art Magazine

Demographics: From my research, Millennials is the generation that are mainly appealed and engaged in art, therefore its's highly likely most demand for art magazines across different platforms would come across people of this age group. The intended target audience is from people aged  26-41 years old and it can also appeal to older audiences as well as they also tend to enjoy this genre as anything  was pretty popular to do back in the day Women tend to enjoy art more than men which suggests that they are the main target audience that editors are trying to appeal to. Younger audiences may not be appealed by art as they may find it boring, therefore losing interest the magazine.

Psychographics: Activities from this type of magazine is very mixed. It follows the trends with relevant art styles today which would make this type of magazine to be mainstream. Magazines like ARTnews, Apollo are tracking the development of art and featuring it in their magazines so it would be appealing to a larger audience.

Geographics: Art magazine would be shown to a national and a geographical audience as it would feature art from around the world, celebrating the works of artists in different countries which could engage audiences to read more of the magazine.

3. Sports Magazine

Demographics: Young people are very active and do enjoy sports as they do PE in school and the activities can be really fun for them. It could suggest that they may be more appealed to sport magazines so the target audience would be for teens and also to older audiences like Millennials.

Psychographics: For the activities, it would generally include different types of sport that everyone enjoys for example football, table tennis, basketball and etc.

Geographics: With regards to geographics, this would be shown to a geographical audience because sports have evolved to a culture that audiences form around the world engage in. An example of this would be World Cups when different countries play against each other which may attract a mass audience.

4. Entertainment Magazine

Demographics: Entertainment would generally attract an older demographic as the humour of the magazine would be more appealing to them so it suggests that the target audience would be typically be for Gen X.

Psychographics: There would be a diverse set of activities for this type of magazines for different types of entertainment.

Geographics: This would probably be shown to a national audience because different countries have different demographics in which they have different cultures sense of humour for their country so a magazine set on a national audience would be conventional.

5. Fashion Magazine

Demographics: Fashion magazines has a really large audience across different age groups. However the age group that it would be targeted towards Millennials aged 25 to 34 years as this age group

was the largest digital buyers for this genre. Moreover, people aged 55-64 are estimated to be the age group that would predominately spend the most on clothing which implies that this is the target audience editors wanted to get across. The gender would be mainly females as they are mostly the subject for this genre. It could also vary as men are sometimes shown in a print fashion advert but rarely as men are typically uninclined to fashion.

Psychographics: Activities for fashion magazines would consists of different types of poses in different environments in terms of genre and camera techniques.

Geographics: Fashion would typically be shown to a national audience because  different countries have different fashion styles which will appeal to their demographic audience so editors would keep up with the trends with fashion styles for the certain country in order to make audiences inclined to want to read the magazine.

Platform Considerations

Digital

VS

Print

As we are moving on to a time where the use of technology is becoming a prominent factor in our everyday lives, It is clear that there there is a less of a demand in the market for print magazines and more of a demand for digital magazines. This is because there is more of an advantage of digital magazines than print magazines and it appeals more to different audience and is more likely going to appeal to future generations as it provides audiences with the satisfaction of looking at a magazine through their screens. For instance in terms of cost, it is cheaper to publish a digital magazine than a print magazine as it saves the time of having to go through the trouble of printing and distribution, whereas for digital magazines it provides publishers the flexibility to publish in different platforms with little or no cost. The benefit for print magazines is that many readers like sitting down and reading a physical magazine as a form of relaxation as it gives them a break from staring at their screens all the time. It is also provides the flexibility to read at any time without the event of having technical issues which could appeal generally to different generations who lived life before the internet was invented due to this flexibility. The limitation for print magazines is that it's not really in the times anymore. With that being said marketers nowadays are neglecting print media because it is becoming an ineffective way to promote their brand to a larger audience. In the digital age we are living in, marketers are more inclined to use digital media for their magazines. However when using this type of media it poses a limitation for digital. One of which is that it can be harder to read. This is because you'd have to adjust the setting to zoom in and out which is ineffective as it could put someone off reading the rest of the magazine as these features distract the audience from reading the magazine. Another limitation for digital magazines is that it won't function well if your internet connection is bad. This is ineffective as people wouldn't get to read it at that the time and may even put them off wanting to read digital magazine or articles at all. The same can be said for the software of the magazine, if it's slow and outdated then it can put people off as well. With regards to technical requirements, print would be framed in a front cover and a double page spread. The sizing would be 420 x 275 for a double page spread magazine and 180 x 150 for a front cover. For digital it would typically be framed automatically into the framing of the magazine.

Guardian Article

The Guardian Article shows the demise of the British love with magazines though the use of graphs and stats which shows the decline of the sales and engagement of print magazines in the UK due to the developing era of online media.

This graph shows the total amount paid for UK magazines. In this graph, it is clear that there is a gradual decline of sales between the years of 2005 to 2018. In 2006, that was when the sales for magazines in the UK has peaked, with around £1.2 billion from 2007 onwards the sales have been going down. This is because the use of digital media has made it easy for people to access magazines. This reaches into 2018 when the sales fell into £481 million. This result shows how much people are losing interest to physical magazines as roughly 60% of sales of magazines in the UK have decreased which is effective as it adds pressure to print magazine editors as people are not spending as much as they use to on magazines which could result on them losing a lot of money distributing and not getting their money in return by their audiences.

This graph shows how many copies of magazines have been sold from the period of January - June 2019. From the results, it shows that the bestselling magazine is TV Choice which had a sale of about 1,122,207 magazine sales. These results show that there are still people who have interest on print magazines. However this is not as high as previous years like 2005 as it would be half a billion sales by then. This could imply that most demographics has moved on to the digital era and are using their electronic devices to access magazines. These results show the massive decline of magazines which puts marketers at big risk of not making enough money and closing down.

Based on the graph and results from The Guardian, it has shown that print magazines sales are going down in a rapid state as we move on to a time where magazines are available digitally, which provides more advantages that inclines different demographics to this media. This is evident as in 2018 two magazine companies closed down due to this decline of sales which are NME after 66 years of printing and Shortlist which is the biggest men's magazine circulation. This goes to show that print magazines are at risk because they are not making enough money as they used to.

Denotation

The denotation for this magazine is a fashion magazine by THE RAKE which features a middle aged man named Benedict Cumberbatch (as stated in the main coverline) as the main image of the magazine. This magazine also denotes Benedict wearing a light blue suit which symbolises his wealth and status to audiences. This magazine shows him sitting down in an upright posture, flexing his watch and his stern NVC which shows to audience his knowledge and power, deeming a great first impression for Benedict. The background colour of this magazine denotes dark blue and the use of the dark colour allows him stand out more in the magazine. There are a lot of coverlines in this magazine which helps audiences to understand what the content of the magazine. The use of all the coverlines helps audience to decide whether the magazine is worth reading. The colour scheme for the font styles is grey which could be used so ut won't distract audiences from the magazine. The main coverline features the man of the the images name which allows the audience to recognise the man in the image.

Mise-en-scene

This magazine features a lot of interesting elements of mise-en-scene. One of the features seen in this magazine is costume. As you can see from this magazine, the main subject is seen wearing a suit. His suit brings connotations to power, status, hegemony and wealth. The main subject is well dressed in his light blue suit which gives audiences an impression that he is a methodical and an ambitious individual who cares about his appearance which gives audiences a good impression that he is a responsible person. It can also imply that he is upper class as the way his clothes are neat does reflect his high status. For props we can see the man wearing a rather expensive watch. The way he flexes his watch out of his wrist tells us how wealthy and confident he is to show his valuable object to the audience. This is effective because it can also spark first-sight interest to fashion lovers as they may find the watch intriguing to look and could be encouraged to see the whole magazine. Furthermore, it is clear that the editor of this magazine wanted to appeal to the audience adequately by the use of lighting here that beams on his watch and the watch reflecting it back. This goes to show how extortionate and precious the prop is as the light highlights it's importance and distinctiveness to the audience. Benedict wears it with so much care which signifies to the audience how valuable and important the watch is to him. This prop is effective for this type of magazine as it is its first of all an expensive item which is conventional for what this type of genre needs which will be eye-catching for fashion audiences which is a great first impression of appealing to them for a fashion magazine. It is also effective because the use of his watch will suggest to the audience that he has great taste in fashion, causing audiences wanting to discover more about him which would likely cause an increase in demand in the market for the magazine genre. In the magazine, Benedict is shown in a dark navy blue coloured background.

The use of the navy blue background really allows the audience to focus only on the subject as he stands out and the use of the bright white light that shines at him brings connotations to innocence and purity which evokes a really positive first impression of his character for audience, encouraging them to discover more about him and reading the magazine. Lighting is shown very well in the front cover of this magazine. The type of lighting we can see is high-key lighting and the use of this is very effective as it shows the front of the man with light, casting out the shadows visible in the front with the key and fill lighting. It is clear that the editor's choices here are effective as the lighting symbolises his exemplary character and the use of no shadows not being in his face can suggest that he's pure and righteous. We can also see this in his NVC which we can see his facial expressions is serious and stern which can suggest that he is hard-working and determined which is effective to fashion lovers as they would want to read more about him. This facial expression is stereotypical in today's society as men are stereotyped to be serious and hegemonic which is reflected in this magazine really well. He is also sitting in a good posture which represents his strong levels of masculinity as he sits in a erect posture. It can also evokes his self-respect for himself and his confidence to express himself which deems him as an likeable person overall which will lure and engage many audiences to read the magazine.

Typography

The use of typography in this magazine is relatively limited. I feel like the editor decided to not focus with the font styles and focus on the subject alone because for fashion, the first thing people look at is the image of the person therefore it is the PRIME focus of the magazine. The font styles follow a basic font structure so it doesn't distract the audiences from the subject. In terms of colour schemes, colour of the font is grey, this colour is a formal colour and it has connotations of maturity and intelligence. The colour can also connote masculinity and this is great here as it reflects the man's personality which is displayed through the use of his costume and his NVC. The masthead of this magazine is at the top of the magazine which is helpful in letting people know the company of the magazine. It has a grey colour and they feature men in their magazines so the colour could bring connotations to strong masculine traits which is stereotypical in this case as the person in the image is a man. The masthead follows a simple font style which represents men having a simple life as men live easier than women which I feel the editor did well symbolising this here. The main coverline feature the mans name 'Benedict Cumberbatch' which is good here as it allows fashion audiences to identify who the person is and give credit to what's due. The use of the font size is useful here as it allows audiences to identify the important information first such as the person in the images name as it also promotes the person to the right audience. This magazine doesn't feature quite a lot of conventions though which could put this magazine at risk of lower engagement from audiences as they may not be convinced enough to look into the magazine.

Target Audience

The target audience for this magazine would usually be for woman as they are mainly into fashion themselves. However, since THE RAKE magazines features mainly men, it may also be appealing to male audiences. I feel like what THE RAKE did was wise as they recognised that there MAINLY women are mostly engaged by fashion magazines from different magazines like Vogue, Elle, Marie Claire etc and rarely or not at all we see men displayed in fashion magazine which was brought up the editors attention. I feel like they thought that this was really cliché for fashion magazines to always feature woman and not subvert the norm so the strategy they've done is by featuring men and collaborating with famous celebrities which was really useful as it would spark interest rapidly from male audiences which would draw them to the genre of fashion which will fix the gap in the market for male audiences to be engaged from this genre. This magazine is a print magazine so it would appeal more to older audiences. Since print magazines is starting to become a thing of the past, meaning hardly anyone is buying them, it would result in inadequate engagement from younger audiences as they are more appealed to look at things online than on print platforms.

Format Discussion

This magazine is a print fashion magazine which subverts the norm and features a man as the main image which is good as it appeals to male audiences as males are not too engaged with fashion magazines. This magazine follows certain conventions required for a magazine, deeming it to be somewhat conventional. However, the cons fot his magazine is that other conventions are not featured here. For example, this magazine is missing a selling line which could affect this magazine as it doesn't advertise anything particularly interesting about the magazine, therefore it may give the audience a negative impression that this magazine is rather boring. It is also missing a Left Third, Dateline and Website Link. These conventions that this magazine isn't very good as it limits the options customers and clients can see which may be off-putting for a minority of viewers. Additionally, this sets this magazine at quite a huge disadvantage because although this magazine looks modern and relevant, younger audiences, particulry men wouldn't go and buy this magazine as print media is declining nowadays and there is more of a demand for digital magazines. Overall, the use of the editors choices have made this magazine to stand out well with a male used for a fashion magazine which will make this magazine do well in the market in terms of sales.

Magazine 2

Gaming convention.jpg

Other conventions not included: Selling Line, Left Third, Date Line

Denotation

The denotation for this magazine is a green gaming magazine which features a CGI gaming character. This gaming magazine is by Computer Gaming World and it is featured at Game of The Year Awards, this could suggest that audiences loved the game and the editor decided to display this to gain attraction from gamers. The colour scheme for this magazine is yellow and the layout of the magazine is cohesive as it the colour yellow is consistent. As you can see in this magazine it features a lot of coverlines which tells people loads of options of what to expect for the content of the magazine. It features a website link which is useful as it allows audiences to see more information about this magazine. The font style of the masthead is bold which could help people identify the magazine company.

Mise-en-scene

This magazine features a lot of interesting elements of mise-en-scene. One of the features is props, as we can see here the gaming character had rings on his nose, tooth and chains on his neck. These props bring connotations of a gangster, evil, dangerous which suggests to the audience that he could be a villain of the game which gives them a bad first impression of the character because he follows the stereotypes with his facial expressions that he causes trouble. Furthermore, we can see this through the use of his NVC, his facial expressions appears to be very threatening and menacing which can imply to the audience that he is powerful, a threat to society and a character not to be messed with. As you can see with his eyes, they are red. Red brings connotations to danger, anger, blood, death. The colour of of his eye allows the  audiences to identify that this character is indeed a threat which will evoke an unsettling and enigmatic feeling from just looking at his red eyes alone, it can suggest to them that he is capable of ANYTHING which strikes a sense of fear for a character for gamers. His skin colour is yellowish-green. The colour green has connotations of health, freshness, wealth, expansion and increase. However the use of the yellow colour contradicts the positive connotations of the colour above as it brings negative connotations of warning, illness and potential disaster. The way the yellow colour blends into the green shows how the character is evolving to this evil and intimidating character which strikes a sense of fear for gamers which is great for how the gaming character is portrayed here. The whole magazine features only the characters face alone which allows audiences to see the characteristics of his face which ushers in a sinister vibe to the gaming audience. His teeth appears to be large and spiky and very dark. This gives the audience an impression that the character lacks oral hygiene and is mysterious as his teeth are not normal. It also tells us that this character is subordinate in society and should be avoided. This can link to stereotypes of lower class people in our society today as they lack hygiene and could appear very mysterious as they are likely to cause harm which is represented well here. The way the editor has sized him as taking up most of the space with a Close Up shot implies that he is dangerous in a way that he is also seen as dominant as he's a character that no-one would go near. The way that his face cuts just over half way into the magazine proves that he is a mysterious character who should indeed be feared by gamers.

Typography

The use of typography in this magazine is fairly conventional. As you can see in the magazine, the texts you see in the magazines are bold which is a smart choice that the editor did to get the audiences attention especially since younger audiences are more appealed to games than any other audience. The masthead of this magazine is conventional to a typical magazine as it is the largest font, it is bold and clear which is good for the audience to see and to identify the magazine company. There are loads of coverlines which is good especially for this type of magazine because it summarises the magazine which helps the audiences to know what to expect and to convince them to continue reading the magazine. The coverlines in these magazines show great levels of cohesion as the colour scheme is yellow so the use of this colour is shown in all the coverlines and is even shown in the main coverline as the text 'Game of the Year Awards' is highlighted in that colour. This shows that the editors choices was effective here as cohesion is used methodically here as all the coverlines share the same colour, deeming this magazine as cohesive. The use of the editors choices of the bold font in the Masthead and the main coverline here are effective here as it signifies how BIG of a threat the character is and how he should be feared by gamers.

Target Audience

This type of genre would have quite a lot of audiences as gaming is popular within a variety of ages and generations. However, the target audience for this magazine would primarily be aimed for younger audiences within the ages of 13+ This is because CGI gaming was created around the time younger audiences were growing up. For example, a popular console in the 2000s called Nintendo Wii had many CGI games that many young people played as part of their childhood for example, Mario Kart Wii, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Super Mario Galaxy are games made with CGI. This is evident that many young people played these iconic games as they were created for kids which did well in the market with sales so therefore it implies that young people are engaged with CGI games. Although kids do enjoy playing games, for this magazine, for ethical reasons, it may not be suitable for anyone under the age of 13 as the use of the characters fierce and threatening NVC alongside the negative connotations that is shown in the front could be presented as upsetting and scary through the eyes of younger children. Onto the positive side of this magazine, younger audiences of aged 13 and over would enjoy reading this magazine because although the character in the magazine seems to be threatening, they could find the character to be quite interesting which could spark an interest for people in this age group to read more about this magazine and find out more about the character that is shown in the front cover. In terms of gender, the magazine would be targeted towards boys as it appears to be a fighting game, so stereotypes fall into place. Men are seen as strong, independant and fearless whereas women are seen as a damsel-in-distress and weak. So in this case here, women might feel quite unsettled by the use of how threatening this character is being portrayed in the front cover so it will primarily be engaging to males as it presents masculine traits well here.

Format Discussion

This magazine is a gaming magazine which features a lot of conventions needed for this type of magazine. The use of the large and bold font for the masthead and the coverlines evokes in an eye-catching first impression for gamers, luring them to continue reading the magazine. Although the interesting cohesive features provides advantages of this gaming magazine, in today's world, this magazine would get less attention because it is a print magazine. Print magazines nowadays are declining in sales as no one is reading or buying them anymore, especially because gaming is targeted towards teens. This is because nowadays, teens usually go on their phones to look at things because in today's world, everything is online and teens wouldn't want to buy a magazine with their own money when they could just look at it online with little or no cost. On the bright side, this magazine could also appeal to older viewers as they wouldn't mind reading a print magazine and are engaged from reading a magazine. Overall, this magazine would realistically receive a poor reception in terms of sales as teens are MAINLY into gaming but would not get a print magazine.

Double Page Article 1

Beauty magazine.jpg

Denotation

The denotation for this magazine is a pink beauty/urban double page article dedicated to Nicki Minaj. This magazine has a clear colour scheme. The colour scheme is pink and we can see this as the some parts of the text like the stand first, subject, quote, and even her lipstick is pink which implies to the audience that the colour pink is the clear colour scheme here. This double page spread features all the conventions that is expected for this type of article which implies that it is conventional. Nicki Minaj is wearing a zebra-patterned dress with an object in her hand that says 'ICON'. The use of her clothing here shows to the audience that she is unique and expressive. The colour of the background is light pink which follows on the general colour scheme we can see here which is pink. This article features all the conventions required, making it conventional for what this type of article needs.

Mise-en-scene

This magazine features a lot of interesting elements of mise-en-scene. One of the features is costume. The costume that the girl is wearing is a black and white (zebra-patterned) dress. This colour really allows the audience to not get distracted as black and white are two simple colours, to see it designed in a zebra-patterned the the girl is wearing implies that the girl has an unique fashion sense which would therefore create a first-sight interest because the girl (Nicki Minaj) is wearing this costume. It could also give audiences an impression that she is rather expressive and unique which is conventional for what a beauty magazine needs in order to stand out in front of its audience. Another element of mise-en-scene is props. Props is used effectively here as we can see the girl wearing a ring that covers her whole hand with an object that says 'ICON'. This alone is really interesting as it enables the audience to get to provide interesting connotations with the girl that she is passionate, eloquent and rather extravagant as this prop would typically cost a fortune which could also bring an impression that she is wealthy to afford this prop and is happy to show of to beauty fans her ring. This prop is good for this magazine as it has the same colour as the dress that she is wearing. This shows great levels of cohesion as the colour black and white is the same as the costume which is effective here as the use of the cohesive colours here will engage the audience more and not distract them or disengage them from looking at this magazine. Another element of mise-en-scene that is shown here is NVC. In this double page article, the girl is seen with a rather stern and aware face. This facial expression that the girl poses is really effective as it shows to the audience that she is over the top and dramatic which is a convenient way in getting audiences attention at first sight. One of her hands is touching her shoulder and the other is touching the props in her clothes. This gesture justifies the fact that she is over the top and is attention-seeking as she put her hands in uncommon places in her body. Her lips are pink which shows cohesion as the colour scheme of this magazine is pink. Another element of mise-en-scene that is seen here is lighting. The lighting that is seen here is high-key lighting. The use of the lighting here signifies her innocence but can also suggest that she can stand out so the audience will have their fullest attention on her.

Typography

There is a lot of typography features to be seen in this double page article. Every convention required for this article is displayed here, making this magazine to be conventional. For instance, the first letter of the magazine should always be bigger than the rest of the letters. This is known as Stand First. The stand first in this double page spread is displayed before the text which is conventional. It follows the colour scheme which is pink, this is effective as the main convention of this double page spread uses cohesion methodically which will keep the eyes of the audience engaged as the colour scheme is presented in a methodical manner. The headline of this double page spread contains the girls name which is Nicki Minaj in big bold letters. The headline is a text that is meant to lure the audience into the article and this article's headline has those conventions. It also follows the colour scheme which shows that great levels of cohesion is presented here. The fact that the headline shows the name of the girl will allow audiences to familiarize themselves with the girl which will lure in more audiences as Nicki Minaj has a large fanbase so the editors wanted to establish this and make 'Nicki Minaj' the largest font style for beauty and urban lovers to recognise. The columns of this article are well spread out and easy to read which is conventional and effective for the audience as they can read the contents of the magazine. The columns of this article are numbered which is useful to the audience as shows them the order to read them by which is effective. The quote is highlighted in pink which is effective as it shows cohesion with different elements of the article. It is also displayed alongside with the subject as it is highlighted in the article which a really effective convention that the editors have added in this article. Overall, it is clear that this article has all the conventions for typography that is typically in a double page spread, which makes it completely conventional.

Target Audience

With regard to target audience for this article, it is clear that it is targeted toward Nicki Minaj's fanbase which would be from people aged 16-32 years old. This is because she is pretty old school so therefore an older demographic would be more inclined to her. Another reason why it is targeted to this age group is because it is an urban article so this could generally appeal to a younger demographic as they would associate themselves with the type of clothing that she is wearing. With regards to gender, this article would be targeted towards girls as the main image of the magazine features a girl which gives the audience an impression that the editors are targeting a female audience. This would be really effective because Nicki Minaj (who is the main image) is a mainstream artist so this article would surge to a mass audience as she is well known and loved by her fans. Nicki Minaj is known for her expressive presence in the media so the editors conveyed it well here in the image as it shows her being expressive which is effective here as this would be eye-catching in the eyes of the audience in a positive way and they would be inclined to read more of the magazine.

Denotation

This double page article has loads of interesting denotations to spot. For instance, the denotation for this double page article is a music magazine that is from DIY magazine. The person in this article is in a recording studio which can suggest that he into music. There are a lot of musical related equipment which could imply to the audience that he is recording his voice for a music video. It is clear that the colour scheme of this article is brown and grey as it is presented as the background colour. In terms of typography, the denotation of the colour scheme is red and yellow. We can see this in the shadow of the fonts and other boxes which shows cohesion by staying consistent to the initial colour scheme.

Mise-en-scene

This double page article showcases loads of cohesive and interesting elements of mise-en-scene. One of those elements is setting. In this magazine we can establish that the environment we can see is a studio as the use of musical equipment that we see around the room implies that this environment is conventional to a musical studio. This is effective as it will help the audience to establish this convention that this is a music article and will incline them to read on the rest of the article as they are appealed by the genre the article is representing. Another element of mise-en-scene we can see is NVC. In this article we can see the subject wearing headphones with microphones around him. This gives the audience an impression that he is passionate of music which is evident as all the equipment that is around him implies that he dedicated to this genre. This is effective as he would appeal to music fans as they would also find him dedicated to music. We can also see his facial expression to be fierce, this creates meaning for the audience as they will have the impression that he is engaged with the music he is listening to from the headphones. This is justified as he is holding the microphone stand. Usually you don't touch the stand of the microphone but in this article the man is doing so. The man also puts one leg up and puts it in a chair, this can imply that he is immersed and really into the music that he is listening to which can incline music fans towards this article as his love for music which is displayed through his body language and his facial expressions come across positively, inspiring and encouraging towards the target audience of this article which could cause a demand on the market for this type of article.

Another element of mise-en-scene that we can see here is props. Props is the biggest element of mise-en-scene in this article. This is evident as we can see a lot of musical equipment like microphones, stands, headphones, chair and etc. This gives the audience an impression that this double paged spread is inspired by a musical setting. The use of all the props in this article is effective as it gives the audience an insight to how music is recorded behind the scenes which could appeal to them wanting to read the magazine even more to want to find out more information inspired by the props. These props that we can see are also effective as they are conventional to the genre of music, meaning audiences who enjoy everything about music would be appealed to want to read more on this magazine as it shows the equipment that is used to make a song. Lastly, we have costume, as we can see from the man's clothes it seems quite casual which gives an impression to the audience that this is the type of clothes you would wear to a music studio. This type of clothing is a great idea for the editors to use as it could appeal to their target audience as they wear casual clothing, which is effective as the audience can be engaged by the type of fashion choice that is displayed here.

Typography

In terms of typography, this article evokes eye-catching conventions that has really done this double page spread justice. The most interesting convention of them all is the stand first. This is because in this double page there is two of these in this article that are spread out in different sections. It even has the same letter 'Y' as the stand first, this feature that the editors included here is really captivating because it achieves what editors wanted it to do which shows a sense of cohesion as they are the same letters that are used in different columns of the double page. This article also features a quote that is highlighted and has the name of the person who said this. This is effective as this article gives credit to the person who said this here which enables the audience to conduct further research onto the person. This article is spread out in columns which is conventional for a double page. It is laid out methodically on the right hand side of the double page spread, giving space to the main image and the setting and props. This is an effective edit for editors as it's easier for the audience to look at because as everything is put in different places in the double page spread. The fonts of this article is cohesive as the shadow of the text is red and yellow, we can see this in the subject headline and the outline of the pictures which creates a methodical and eye-catching double page for the audience to see and to make them want to read this article.

Target Audience

The target audience for this article is for people who listen to music more. Therefore, this double page spread will reach out to different democratic groups. One of the groups are for people aged 16-28 years old because they use music streaming services the most which consists of Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music etc. This implies that they enjoy music which the editors took into consideration when making this article and added eye-catching conventions to this double page as a way to encourage them to have a look at the article. This double page would also reach out to old school fans of people aged 45+ because back in the day music was classic, nostalgic and iconic therefore with the interesting mise-en-scene and typography elements this article has would attract this demographic into checking out this double page spread. With regards to gender, this article is targeted to everyone as music is for everyone regardless of sexuality. However in this double page there is a man as the main image so this could reinforce Stuart Hall's Reception Theory as women could take the oppositional reading as they may feel that this may not apply to them since the opposite sex is the main image.

Format Discussion

With regards to format, this magazine would do really well in engagement. This is because this format of the article is digital and the demographic that are inclined to music use digital media more than the print sector. This puts this magazine at a great position as most of their target audience would find this double page online and would likely be engaged by the immersing conventions that is displayed there. Nowadays people are inclined to look at things online rather that look at things by print so the double page spread using a digital format for music is an effective way to lure different demographics into this article. The double page spread is digital which provides the advantage of this reaching out to a geographical audience. The props we see in this article are standard musical instruments which are microphones, headphones and etc so this would be a great way to represent modern music to the world which I feel that this format is a perfect choice from the editors of this double page spread.

Construction Log

Log 1

In this edit, I added my chosen photo to the framing of the canvas in which I set to 595 x 842 px to evoke a conventional magazine size. I then zoomed in my picture and positioned it in the middle so that the audience can see the main image clearly.

Log 2

In this edit, In terms of typography, I firstly added the Masthead font in which I chose Bronx BS as I felt this typeface of the font would be attention-grabbing to my targeted demographic group. I then when on and added a inner shadow and stroke behind the text to add a bit of depth into it.

Log 3

In this edit, I added a bomb image to my magazine logo to which is called 'DA BOMB' I though adding an image in the logo that is literate to the name would be a unique idea to sell off this magazine to my target audience. I rotated the bomb image anti-clockwise by -40*c so that the rope of the bomb touches the B. I also added a QR Code, I added this as I felt like this would be the best method to get my target audience to engage with the magazine as they can scan with their phones to quickly gain access to my magazine website.

Log 4

Alongside my QR Code, I also added a barcode. I added this as it was conventional for a magazine to had one, thus I decided my magazine should follow in this trend. In the picture on the right, you can see I added www.dabomb.com as the writing on the bottom of the barcode, I did this because many Hip-Hop magazines I've seen have their barcodes this way so I decided to do the same to stick with the trend. I also added a gradient strip at the top of the magazine as I wanted my Selling Line to be visible and prominent for my audience to see.

Log 5

In this edit, I added my main coverline to the magazine. The font I used is Fugaz One for "D-Money's" and Six Caps for "Secret To" and "Success" in Bebas Neue. This edit was effective as it the font's typeface shows an element of the genre with it being styled and eye-catching to the audience. It was particularly important I represented this font in this convention as the main coverline is what people would typically read first so it is crucial that it was methodical and eye-catching.

Log 6

I decided that I wanted the main coverline to be more expressive, so with this thought in mind, I rasterised the text layer to provide me with the ability to apply a gradient effect to my selected font. Firstly, I changed the word "SUCCESS" into "SUCCE$$" as Hip-Hop artists are rich and successful so I thought this was a great way to express the wealth of my artist through font which is cohesive with the genre. Secondly, I rasterised it and selected the Magic Pen tool which enabled me to select the letters of the word Success. I changed the letters "SUCCE" to a gradient mix of mustard yellow and orange and the "$$" to green. I used these colour schemes as yellow and orange connotes positivity, warmth and confidence which reflects the subject being successful. Likewise, green evokes connotations of wealth, prestigious and abundance which reflects on my subject's wealth and status as a result of his success.

Log 7

In this edit, I added a price tag for the magazine. I written the price tag as "2.99 £" as from my research with Hip-Hop front covers I see their price tag written this way so I wanted to continue this common convention and have it displayed into my front cover. I also wrote the price at a cheap price as this is my first magazine so a minimal price was appropriate for this case. It also displays my Website Link which can be seen next to it.

Log 8

After I added the main coverline, I added one of my coverlines into the front cover. I wrote a quote that my subject "D-Money" said which is "Started from the BOTTOM, Made it to the TOP!" I felt like this was effective to include here as it gives the audience a personalised review by the person being displayed of how he is like and if he would be interesting to have a look about.

Log 9

Next I added more coverlines, I decided to write "10 Tips" so that the audience can discover more about my subject and be inspired and motivated to continue reading to discover the success of D-Money. I also wrote a coverline of a quote from a famous artists of my genre called Lil Baby. I wrote "The real competition right now" in Fugaz One font. I thought having Lil Baby who is an extremely popular and mainstream artist commenting in my magazine will lure in a lot of audiences into engaging with this magazine. I also added colour to the coverline in the picture in the left so it can attract the attention of my audience.

Log 10

In this edit I added this coverline by the bottom of the magazine. I wrote "From the Hood Life to the Good Life" This edit is effective because it rhymes and with Hip-Hop songs they rhyme in different lines of the song so by showcasing this element would show cohesion to the genre that I am doing.

Log 11

I didn't know what to put for the selling line so I conducted some research and I saw some magazine reference the year that it's been published in so I decided to write "2022" so that the audience knows that it is new and relevant to today's trends.

Log 12

Next I added the social media links. I did this because my target audience uses social media the most therefore I wanted to include this to ensure that they can add up the socials to get informed of any new magazine projects to come.

Log 13

In this edit, I was complete with my magazine, so I thought. I asked a family member for feedback and they said that it seems to colourful and that I had too stick to one colour scheme with the fonts so in response to this I changed it to this:

What I did to change is by changing the colours of the words "10" "TOP!" and "HOOD" and instead changed it to grey and white to follow the colour scheme of my Masthead. This was effective as it showed cohesion in colour in the font as the theme is easy to identify.

Log 14

This is my second to last edit and what I did is that following the last log, I reduced the tint as he picture looked quite fake with the amount of colour saturation in the magazine. Therefore I added a lesser and more defined tint to make my subject glow in a methodical manner. Another edit I have done is that I have made the coverlines smaller. This was because I discovered that there was a lot of writing to look at at once since all the font size are the same. Therefore I decided to lower the font size of the coverlines so that my main coverline stays prominent and visible for my audience to see.

Log 15

Whilst I thought Log 14 was my last edit, I asked my peers for feedback and they said that there was too much to look at so therefore, in response to this, I changed the colours of the word "SUCCE$$" to the same diagonal grey gradient colour scheme for the font styles, as I thought the yellow and green colours were good, they were just too distracting which unfortunately didn't work out in the end. I made the socials links smaller and more cohesive by changing the colour to grey so It follows the prominent colour format. I also made the pricetag and the website link more visible to see by changing the colour to white and adding a stroke onto it to it so the visibility of the conventions are clear.

Log 16

For my last edit, I added boxes behind my website link and my pricetag so it is clearer to see as it wasn't that visible behind the image. I also changed the selling line from "The hottest Hip-Hop news of 2022" to "Hip-Hop's most influential magazines" I thought this was a good edit as this sells the magazine out more and it's more of a professional version for selling lines.

Front Cover Magazine

Front cover.jpg

EVALUATION

Honestly, In general I struggled a lot with the brief to make a front cover. I initially thought It would be easy but I ended up struggling with what things to write in terms of coverlines and selling lines. The front cover magazine is the creation that was hardest to make because I didn't exactly know what to write for the coverlines. Nevertheless, I managed to persevere by asking for feedback to enable me to improve and produce eye-catching magazine that suits my chosen genre.

The use of mise-en-scene for my Front Page Magazine is overall conventional. This is because I researched the types of environment that Hip-Hop artists use to acquire me with the knowledge to showcase this in my final creation. For instance one of the conventions I used is NVC. In my front cover my subject is seen covering his face with his hand, this is a common theme with artists in Hip-Hop as they don't want their face to be fully seen they'd often wear masks to cover one half of their face to evoke an anonymous appearance. I made my subject like this to create an enigmatic first impression for the audience, encouraging them to read the magazine to discover more of who my subject is. Another element I used is lighting. The type of lighting I used is high-key lighting. I used this to show my subject in a refined way to show that he is wealthy with the bright white light that shines on his face. This was vitally important as so my audience would not perceive him in a bad way as there are negative views on people not showing their full face. I feel the lighting helped displayed a sense of innocence to my subject which will make the audience perceive him positively.

I also used setting for the magazine. This is because I discovered from my research that Hip-Hop pictures are taken in the urban areas so followed the trend to stay conventional an take it in a abandoned environment to show the audience of my artist's roots and where he came from and how successful he is today which is displayed by his costume. The costume my subject is wearing is a Moncler tracksuit with a Louis Vuitton hat and scarf. These items are very expensive in the market which is evident of the success of my subject being displayed here as he is wearing it. This is effective as it shows that he is wealthy which will help my target audience identify that he is from this genre. These elements listed above in this convention would appeal to my target audience as I have accurately and methodically displayed the mise-en-scene to a real Hip-Hop magazine for it to be conventional which will come fresh in the market which would spark interest by many people as it's recent and brand new which the audience would like.

The use of typography in this magazine shows great levels of cohesion and represents the genre well. For the masthead, I used Bronx BS for my magazine named "DA BOMB". I did this as this font has an expressive design which symbolises a fuse with the fuzzy bits by the side of the letters. I felt like this would have been appropriate to add this as the masthead. Also, I added a bomb picture in my magazine masthead to fill the "O" in BOMB. This was effective as this is a unique approach to front cover magazines which isn't common so I thought this was a great idea to add this to my masthead.  I also added a gradient to the the word "BOMB" which made half of the letters to have a grey colour diagonally. Another element of typography that I used for this is the main coverline. The font I used for this is Fugaz One and Bebas Neue. These font stood out and had a really bold and immersing design which I felt would be great to add as my main coverline. This bolden font would appeal my target audience as this will be the first thing they see which would grasp in their attention and would maximise audience engagement and satisfaction from my magazine. My coverlines have an excellent element of cohesion which is evident as some words are bold and those words have the same diagonal gradient pattern as what can be seen from my masthead and main coverline. All of these elements will come across as appealing as all the little details I have displayed will recognised by my audience and would be encouraged to check out more about my other magazines through the QR code which directs them to the website.

There were other industrial codes and conventions that were displayed in my PRINT front page. For instance a magazine must have a masthead displayed as this is very conventional for all genres and all the magazines should have this convention. In my front cover, I ensured that the masthead was at the top of my magazine, centred, large and eye-catching to ensure that the audience knows my magazine company. This was then followed by the main coverline which contains the biggest font size of all the coverlines in the magazine. This was displayed in my magazine with a bold prominent font so that the audience can read the main part of my magazine easily as it's methodically laid out for them. Industrial magazines contain coverlines in them, I ensured that coverlines were displayed and was written in a readable font in which I chose Arial for it. Some words were bold and stood out which is normal for magazines in wanting to sell off some key words which is what I have added on my front cover magazine. Social links were also added as my target audience are more socially active online, deeming this as a important convention to add. Another important convention that magazine should have is a barcode which is displayed at the bottom left of my magazine. I also added a QR code which again is an important convention as my target audience can quickly gain access to my magazine website to check out more of my magazine company. All these conventions I have displayed in my magazine would appeal to my target audience as the way I have presented these conventions would appear quite fresh in the eyes of my audience and the market and will generate high engagement from my audience.

With regard to Hip-Hop, I have made some adjustments in my magazine to ensure that it features the same conventions as Hip-Hop. One of the conventions I have added that is conventional to my genre is eye-catching coverlines. One of the words in my coverlines were bold and had a diagonal gradient on it. This would be conventional to Hip-Hop as it's a cohesive pattern that is methodically laid out beautifully and professionally. Another one is the Selling Line. Hip-Hop selling lines are relatively simple but very encouraging. My selling line was initially "The Hottest Hip-Hop News of 2022!" but I went and changed it to "Hip-Hop's Most Influential Magazines" as it sounds more professional and more convincing especially to my targeted demographic. I also added a quote from a well-known Hip-Hop artist, Lil-Baby. This edit was effective as people would want to read about my artist if even a well-known artist comments something good about them. The colour scheme of my magazine is formal dark colours like grey, navy blue, black and yellow for the key words. These will appeal to my target audience as I have used the research into magazines in order to carefully execute an eye catching Hip-Hop front cover magazine. In conclusion, I believe my target audience would engage well with this as it looks professional and methodically laid out, I have followed cohesion carefully in the font styles and overall design to evoke an eye-catching magazine.

Construction Log

Log 1

In this edit, I added my chosen photo to my double page. I decided to have a picture of him standing up as I have a picture of him sitting down in my front page. I thought having two different poses would keep audience engagement at peak as they wouldn't see the same position for both magazines.

Log 2

In this edit, I added a gradient background into my magazine. I liked it as it was nice and dark and the background was not distracting. I did however changed it as I thought it was dull and not engaging for my viewers.

Log 3

In this edit, I added my quote onto the magazine which says "I didn't think I was going to be where I am today" This quote is what my fictional artist says in an interview so I added this so it could be my selling point so that my audience can read more of how he got to where he is.

Log 4

Next up, I decided to change the background to a gradient that matches what my artist is wearing. I thought this was a unique idea as the thought of having my artist's expensive clothes reflected through the background colour is something that is fairly fresh in Hip-Hop magazines which evokes a exciting and immersing first impression to my target audience.

Log 5

In this edit, I added my Stand First into my double page, At first It wasn't going the way I planned as I couldn't align the large size letters with the normal size ones but eventually I mastered it perfectly in the later logs. I also changed the name from "DA BOMB" to "BOMBZ INTERVIEW" as I didn't feel like it was original if I copied my front cover magazine name. Therefore I changed it to a name similar to it. I also decided to keep the artist as "D-Money" as I wanted it to continue on from my front page and for the audience to follow along the storyline of how he got to where he is today.

Log 6

In this edit, I added a drop shadow to the name, "D-Money" to the same blueish colour so that it is cohesive to the colour scheme that is displayed in the background. I also changed the angle to about -140*c and changed the distance so the shadow can be prominently seen behind the text which is effective as this effect is not common in this genre respectively so this would be attention-grapping in the eyes of my target audience.

Log 7

In here I started writing my columns which revolves around my interview with my fictional artist, D-Money. This edit was effective as this is what my audience would read. Having this thought in mind, I used the Arial typeface to type this as the typeface is easy for people of not just my targeted demographic but for all ages to read. I also changed the name from "BOMBZ INTERVIEW" to "BOMBZ PRESS" as I feel like this name is more official and more realistic and the word "press" means news and people also do interviews in the news so I feel like this name works perfectely both ways.

Log 8

For my next edit, I added the full interview in the columns and added a by-line by the bottom of my subject name. I also changed the Stand First to a shorter paragraph as there was too much writing in the previous log in which I decided to shorten it down so that it looks methodical and easier to read. I also added a star box and wrote "Hip-Hop Star!" as a way of selling out my double page to my target audience. I felt like adding this convention makes it stand out in the market as this convention isn't really seen much in double pages which is a great edit.

Log 9

Next up, I changed the size of the star as the writing of "Hip-Hop Star!" was overlapping out of the shape. I made it bigger and then added a gradient overlay which then allowed me to change to the colour scheme of this background which is light navy blue and dark blue. This is effective as colour scheme is an important convention in double pages so I thought this would be methodical for my double page to display the colour scheme.

Log 10

In this edit, I aligned the columns together. I didn't realise that you had to align them together at first but I received feedback and I understood my mistake here. Columns aligned with each other is conventional and is seen in every double page, therefore I made the changes to make sure every line is equal to each other and even putting hyphens if some sentences don't finish in the same line.

Log 11

In here, I changed the quote box size of my double page as it was previously overlapping into my columns, I deleted the rectangle shape and added a circle shape with a gradient overlay of the background colour so the circle is cohesive. I then made the text of my quote smaller so it fits in the new shape and shifted it more to the left so that the columns have more space and are aligned with each other.

Log 12

Lastly, in this edit, I received feedback and was told that the double page was too large, therefore I changed the canvas size to 17cm by 11cm and added some lines that are in frame with the new size to help make some re-adjustments with re-adding my main image to the new size so it's not pixelated.

Double Page Article

Double Page.jpg

EVALUATION

Making the double page article has been somewhat enjoyable for me, I learnt a lot from Photoshop whilst making this article. There has been a lot of edits and size re-adjustments of this article, however I managed to successfully execute the edits based in the feedback I have received whilst making this into the best version possible.

There is a good amount of mise-en-scene for my Double Page Article.  One of it is costume, my subject is wearing the same costume for the front page which is Louis Vuitton hat and scarf and a tracksuit. This costume fits with Hip-Hop as we know Louis Vuitton is an expensive brand so having y subject wear this costume will give the audience an impression that he is wealthy which is conventional as Hip-Hop artists have loads of money which I feel I displayed well in this element. Another element I have used is lighting, The lighting is clear in my subject and has some of the harsh shadows around the left side of his body. This lighting is effective as it focuses on my subjects costume so the audience can see the clothing he is wearing and get an idea of what my subject is like. Another element is setting, in my double page, I cropped my subject out from the original background and added him to my custom made gradient background which is the same colour of clothing that my subject is wearing which is light navy blue and dark blue. This is effective as this creates an immersing background as its two elements of mise-en-scene are cohesive with each other which I felt my audience would like here. The use of mise-en-scene will appeal to my target audience as I have accurately added elements that are conventional and have a sense of urban vibe to what my audience is looking for in the market so this will be decoded in by the audience in a positive manner.

The use of typography in this double page is methodical. In my headline, I wrote "BOMBZ PRESS" with a bomb image replacing the "O" in "BOMBZ". This name is similar to the masthead name "DA BOMB" that I put in the front cover. I called it this name as it features the same artist "D-Money" so I wanted to continue the storyline and make a news version hence the name "press" was an appropriate word. The font I used for the headline was Bronx BS which is the same for what I used in the masthead for the front page. This is effective as the audience can establish the two magazine companies and see the cohesion within the font styles. Another element I used is the subject name. It says "The Rise of D-Money," This is in a white rectangle and had a drop shadow of navy blue, with a visible distance so that you can clearly see the shadow behind the text. This edit is effective as it shows cohesion with the colours and this effect does make it look visually engaging and creative which my audience would be satisfied to see this. Another element of typography is Stand First. The stand first was initially a struggle for me as I couldn't align it with the text after the big letter, however I managed to find a perfect font for this which was Arial Bold for the "W" and Arial Regular for the rest of the words. This is effective as the same typeface makes the fonts cohesive with each other and the sizing and positioning of the stand first is conventional to a double page. My columns are aligned and in exact size which is conventional for a double page in which I have made sure that this is displayed. My quote is smaller but visible so it doesn't take the space of the columns and so it looks methodical. This is effective as so my audience can be inclined to my double page as it is laid out methodically. Overall, the element of typography is displayed really well in my double page which will result in my target audience being appealed as everything is laid out in a professional and unique standard.

With regard to Hip-Hop, I made some adjustment so it looks conventional to a Hip-Hop double page. One of the elements was the subject name. In the subject name there are two white rectangles behind the text. I got the inspiration from research into hip-hop double pages. I feel like this is really effective as these rectangles makes the text eye catching and this works well in my favour as double page articles in this genre has to be attention-grabbing as the audience is a younger demographic so I feel like the subject name is conventional to the genre. What is also conventional to my genre is the background. Whilst doing my research I conducted types of background for double pages of this genre. Most I saw had the subject with background of the existing image and some had just the subject alone and the background custom made. I wanted to get rid of the background and make my own to get the sense of an urban-ish style with the colour schemes representing his clothes. This is conventional to the genre of Hip-Hop as the colours are cohesive and dark formal colours which my subject is wearing with his costume so I feel this convention will be great in the market for Hip-Hop. Lastly, what I added which would be conventional for Hip-Hop is a star shaped box that says "Hip-Hop Star." The star has a gradient overlay of the same background colour. I feel like this is great conventionally for this genre as it sells out the artist who is being displayed in the double page and this genre has conventions that make it stand out to which I feel this convention will make it stand out in the market. I feel like all of this will appeal to my target audience because they will be inclined instantly to my creation as it evokes unique conventions that make the article stand out in terms of mise-en-scene, typography and cohesion. Overall, I have used cohesion efficiently and professionally to create a double page article that will appeal to my target audience.
